What we do

Aukaha represents Manawhenua in the area of environmental health. We support kā Rūnaka to achieve their objectives and aspirations for environmental management in their takiwā (area).

The consultancy facilitates the engagement of Kāi Tahu in local and territorial planning processes, and enables councils and clients to access Rūnaka opinion in a timely and efficient manner.

Aukaha has protocols with the Otago Regional Council and all district councils in Otago, which set out the process for facilitating Kāi Tahu engagement in the councils’ resource consent and plan change processes.

Work we undertake includes:
• Facilitating consultation with the Kāi Tahu Papatipu Rūnaka on applications for resource consent.

• Assessing the impact of development on Kāi Tahu values and aspirations, including undertaking Cultural Impact Assessments (CIAs) for clients as part of the Assessment of Environmental Effects process for notified resource consent applications.

• Analysing and reporting on the impact of environmental policy on Kāi Tahu values and aspirations.

We are currently engaged in a range of projects, including:
• The review of the Otago Regional Policy Statement

• Development of the Second Generation Dunedin City District Plan

• Setting of minimum flows for rivers throughout Otago

• Consultation on development projects including off-shore oil drilling and the development of irrigation schemes.

Te Rōpu Taiao
The Otago councils are signatories to Te Rōpu Taiao, an agreement that enables Kāi Tahu to develop a joint annual work programme with councils on matters of mutual interest.
This supports Kāi Tahu to fulfil their environmental and cultural aspirations, and assists councils to fulfil their statutory responsibilities regarding engagement with Māori.
